I have had an "active category" position or performed "active-category service"
In certain professions, retirement age is based on the type of duties that have been performed. This applies to "active category" position in the public service and to "active and hazardous" service in the electrical and gas industries.
The minimum retirement age is earlier for people in these categories if they meet all of the requirements.
Once you have logged in to your pension account, you will be able to access more information on your entitlements under each of your pension schemes.

Length of service required in order to retire at the above-listed age
Eligibility for retirement at the age listed for your year of birth will depend on your length of service in the electrical and gas industry and on your length of actual active, hazardous, and military service.
Several scenarios are possible.
Scenario 1: you have accrued at least 10 years of hazardous-category service
You can apply to claim your pension at the age listed for your year of birth if you have accrued a total of at least 15 years of service in the electrical and gas industries.
Scenario 2: you have accrued at least 15 years of active, hazardous, and military service
You can apply to claim your pension at the age listed for your year of birth if you have accrued a total of at least 15 years of service in the electrical and gas industries.
| Year in which you claim your pension | Minimum required length of service in the electrical and gas industries |
| 2016 at the latest | 15 years |
| 2017 | 15 years 4 months |
| 2018 | 15 years 8 months |
| 2019 | 16 years |
| 2020 | 16 years 4 months |
| 2021 | 16 years 8 months |
| 2022 and beyond | 17 years |
Example :
- Mr. A was born on February 28, 1966, and began working for the electrical and gas industries on May 20, 2001. He has been performing active-category service at a rate of 100% since January 1, 2004.
- He will have accrued 15 years 8 months of actual active-category service on August 31, 2019.
This means that the earliest date he can claim his pension will be October 28, 2022, because he will not have met the age requirement (56 years 8 months) by the time he has accrued the required minimum length of service.
- If you are only eligible for retirement on the basis of hazardous service, the required length of actual hazardous-category service is 10 years.
- If you have performed military service that counts toward your length of compensation in the electrical and gas industries, it is considered active service. Like hazardous- category service, it will be added on to your active service to reach the 15-year minimum.
Scenario 3 : you have accrued under 15 years of active and hazardous service
Your legal retirement age can be lowered if :
- You have accrued a minimum of 15 years of service in the electrical and gas industries
- And according to the number of years of active and/or hazardous service accrued: your statutory retirement age will be lowered by one year for each 3-year period.
The requirements for a lower statutory retirement age have changed as from January 1st, 2017. For more information, please refer to CNIEG’s website.
Example :
- Ms. B was born on March 15, 1959, and began working for the electrical and gas industries on November 21, 1992. She has been performing active-category service at a rate of 100% since April 1st, 2014.
- She will have accrued 3 years and 4 months of actual active service on July 31st, 2017.
This means that the earliest date she can claim her pension will be November 15, 2018, because she will not have met the age requirement (59 years 8 months) by the time she has accrued the required minimum length of service.
These quarters (or length of service increases) are awarded free of charge and are added on to the member's length of compensation in the electrical and gas industries. They also count toward the member's length of insurance accrued under all schemes combined.
Only members hired prior to January 1st, 2009 are entitled to these additional quarters.
Length of service increases awarded
- Active-category service is increased by 1/6th of actual length: increase of 2 months per year of active service.
- Hazardous-category service is increased by 1/3rd of actual length: increase of 4 months per year of hazardous service.
Military service is considered active service.
